Healthy Small Groups Start With Your Systems & Processes

Last week I was part of a webinar, hosted by CCB (a MAG Partner) with Steve Caton … and Jay McGuirk of FBC Hattiesburg.

We covered off a few topics tied to small group health.

  1. How technology plays a part in enhancing your church’s small group efforts.
  2. Visibility into small group health takes focus.
  3. Measuring life change starts with taking subjective ideas and creating objective measurement.
  4. Reporting for small group health takes consistency (and, then action).
  5. Real-life EXAMPLE from Jay McGuirk at FBC Hattiesburg
  6. Q&A at the end

Here are the webinar notes if you wish to download: MAG & CCB – Small Groups Webinar – Notes – April 2012

Thank you CCB for making an investment in the Kingdom!

Accounting Periods

We work with a lot of church leaders … that have no business doing their own books … for many reasons. Mostly, they aren’t qualified. Secondly, they didn’t start a church to sit behind a desk and guess at bookkeeping.

As a Pastor … God didn’t call you to be an expert in Quickbooks.

However, there are some basics in bookkeeping every church leader should know. One, specifically, is understanding WHY you have an “accounting period.” An accounting period (aka fiscal period or fiscal year) is the tracking time of financial information … usually, 12 months in length.

Your church can choose its accounting period. Many churches use accounting periods starting on January 1 and ending on December 31. Other churches prefer to start on August 1 and end on July 31 … tied to the start of the school year.

Now, why do you have any accounting period? So you can prepare financial statements and see how well you did.

Pretty straight-forward … isn’t it?

Know Your Audience

Recently, I had an interesting experience happen to me. I found myself in a meeting where it was clear that the person with the perceived “power” in the room had not thought about his audience. He had no idea of our backgrounds, our experiences, our education. He just assumed he was smarter and more experienced. Yet, in the end, he did a good job.

The meeting was quite amusing. I’m sure you can relate. Below are my thoughts on this experience.

Let this be a reminder to all our Leaders out there.

What he did wrong:

1) he assumed he knew us based on how we looked & where we lived

2) he was guarded from minute 1 … demonstrating his fear

3) he was late to meet us … 7 minutes to be exact

4) he assumed we held his beliefs and thoughts … not thinking of our perspectives & experience leading up to the meeting

5) he had not prepared and not considered our position in the least

What he did right:

1) he presented the brutal facts

2) he opened up & shared his pain

3) he solicited our help … in a partnership

4) he literally wrote down the things we requested in front of us

5) he took immediate action on quick wins

QUESTION: what about you? How do you prepare for meetings? What goes into your preparation before someone hands you the microphone?

Get the Dad – Get the Family

It should be no surprise to church leaders and pastors that Dads can have an amazing impact on the local church … and so much more … to the family.

If I were looking to grow my church … I would be looking for meaningful and relevant ways to connect with Dads. I believe that if you get the Dad … you get the family. Consider these statistics below.

  1. 43% of US children live without their father [US Department of Census]
  2. 90% of homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes. [US D.H.H.S., Bureau of the Census]
  3. 80% of rapists motivated with displaced anger come from fatherless homes. [Criminal Justice & Behavior, Vol 14, pp. 403-26, 1978]
  4. 71% of pregnant teenagers lack a father. [U.S. Department of Health and Human Services press release, Friday, March 26, 1999]
  5. 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes. [US D.H.H.S., Bureau of the Census]
  6. 85% of children who exhibit behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes. [Center for Disease Control]
  7. 90% of adolescent repeat arsonists live with only their mother. [Wray Herbert, “Dousing the Kindlers,” Psychology Today, January, 1985, p. 28]
  8. 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. [National Principals Association Report on the State of High Schools]
  9. 75% of adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes. [Rainbows for all God’s Children]
  10. 70% of juveniles in state operated institutions have no father. [US Department of Justice, Special Report, Sept. 1988]
  11. 85% of youths in prisons grew up in a fatherless home. [Fulton County Georgia jail populations, Texas Department of Corrections, 1992]
  12. Fatherless boys and girls are: twice as likely to drop out of high school; twice as likely to end up in jail; four times more likely to need help for emotional or behavioral problems. [US D.H.H.S. news release, March 26, 1999]

Church! If you want to make a dent in your local community … start engaging with the Dads! Make your church attractive to Dads. Invest in the Dads. If you do this well … you’ll have SIGNIFICANT impact on your local community.

QUESTION: what is your church doing to attract Dads? How do you plan to connect with them?

Out of Sight Myth

Hey Pastor … yeah, YOU. Sipping your grande Pike with room, with your fancy headphones, journal out, Mac humming, in your local Starbucks.

You’re “virtual.” Why isn’t your whole team?

At MAG … we keep our business on track … virtually (from no office) … with our key/core team scattered across the US, in all 4 time zones. We manage millions of dollars each day with our bookkeeping service, close out hundreds of tasks each day with our EA service, and just get stuff done! All … virtually.

What could your organization learn from us? Do you still think you need an office with your team 20 feet away from you? Here are some ideas for you to consider when you desire to create a more agile, virtual workforce.

1)  With a virtual team … you can stagger “shifts” and create greater coverage.

2)  If you are not hung up on geography … you can hire the best talent with the best experience.

3)  If you hope to hire people who work remote … make sure they have experience working from home and they are/were successful with it. Some people just need to work in an office everyday around other people.

4)  Set expectations on communication … tell everyone that they have to play by the same rules. eMails returned within 24 hours during the business week. Voice-mails returned within 24 hours. What does a 911 text mean? When & how do you “circle the wagons” and request a mandatory meeting on demand via Skype? The key is to teach, model, and expect consistency with your virtual workforce.

5)  Leverage collaborative project/task management tools. They are great ones out there like Basecamp or Campfire. A private group in Facebook can do the trick too.

6)  A virtual employee/team is more productive & efficient. In fact, when we replace an on-site employee who is working 30 to 35 hours per week … we typically replace them with someone who works 15 to 20 hours per week doing the same job/tasks AND more.

At MAG … we know this is possible. We work with businesses too (with our eaHELP service line) … and we see businesses producing great results with a virtual workforce. Why would churches be any different? Just saying … “well, we never did it this way before” or “that’s just the way we are” or “people need to work together in the same office” or “I can’t control people if I can’t see them” are non-thought-out (and typical) responses to a growing trend in work productivity. Burying your head in the sand with this topic is a losing game.

Think I’ve got it wrong? What are some things in your work environment that MUST be done in an office?

An Innovative Fish Bowl

Every once in a while … you just come across an innovative product or service … that catches you. It stands out … for good reason. It forces a paradigm shift in your mind.

Some questions of church innovation immediately pop up in my head:

1)  What could churches do … if they took Research & Development (R&D) seriously?

2  What would churches do if they broke the mold for the Kingdom?

3)  What new progress could be made for the Kingdom when people refused to give up and make change occur for the better?

4)  What is broke in church world … longing for a solution?

5)  Do you think we have come to end of being innovative in the Church?

Innovation is key to our advances. Prayer and bold consideration with God’s glory as our primary aim … should drive us to new heights, greater innovation, and maximum impact for the Kingdom.

For many years, the fish bowl has been the fish bowl. And, then … someone got innovative and the fishscape was created. Goldfish will never be the same.
