A Good Ruling for Churches

You may or may not be aware of a ruling that just happened this week by the US Supreme Court … over job discrimination … in churches. It was a good ruling … in general.

Have a look in the video below (sorry, there is an advertisement in front of the video before it plays).

Church and Politics

Church and State

Who will have political influence with your attendees?

So, I was re-watching a recent series at our church called Recovery Road. It wasn’t a political commentary from the platform. It was more about what our responsibility is … with our nation’s recovery. It begins with me not you. Us not them. Taking ownership of you … before pointing the finger to they. In essence … recovery begins with ME.

Re-watching this series got me thinking …

Why do a lot of pastors shy away from discussing the current political climate? Can the discussion of politics have a place in our churches? Consider these recent stats below.

Portion of people who say the following should be top priority of politicians:

  • 38.1% – Job Creation
  • 16.6% – Budget Deficit
  • 8.7% – Tax Policy
  • 8.6% – Access to Credit
  • 6.7% – Government Regulation
  • 5.2% – Healthcare
  • 4.1% – Housing Market
  • 12% – Other

Portion of people who are highly satisfied with the effectiveness of the federal government: 2%

Portion of people who are highly unsatisfied with the effectiveness of the federal government: 67%

There’s relevant content … tied to appropriately discussing issues that surround our politicians. Here are some examples:

  1. Do you pray for your political leaders?
  2. Do you know where ALL authority comes from?
  3. What is your responsibility with our nation’s recovery?
  4. Contrasting American poverty to third world poverty … do you know the difference?
  5. How can a healthy life can impact our nation’s healthcare system?
  6. If you believe that God created the world … shouldn’t we take care of it?
  7. Can you really point a finger at the nation’s debt when you are maxed out on your credit cards?

The list is endless. You can bring points into your sermon/talk … that are relevant … that don’t require you to state your political affiliation.

Look at it this way … do you want all your attendee’s perspectives on political issues to be fully formed by watching talking heads on TV or people who want to be elected? Or, should you have some influence as well … in their political thinking?

How Leaders Bridge Inspiration with Reality

The Bridge Ahead for Leaders

The Bridge Ahead for Leaders

Church Leaders and other Leaders take note from one person: President Obama. If there is just one case study on inspiring people then letting them down … look no further than the Oval Office. This is not a political slant or commentary … just an observation.

The greatest leaders out there … regardless of trade/vocation … are the ones who can effectively bridge inspiration and reality. They can create hope and vision … AND … confront brutal facts. They can inspire your mind to act … AND … help you see the need to give, sacrifice, dig deep, sweat, & work hard.

This bridge-building effort is a process that looks like this:

  1. Inspire People to the Task(s) – paint the picture of what could happen
  2. Expect/Demand Results Consistent with the Inspiration – what gets measured, gets done
  3. Use Results to Further Inspiration – leverage your measured results for higher goals … keep the momentum

Isn’t it true … that your heart will gravitate towards inspiration? What if you coupled it with results? Wouldn’t you be emboldened?! Dig deeper? Go farther?

What does this look like in your life?

Are you a leader in need of some shifts? More inspiration? More focus on results? Are you REALLY inspiring anyone? Are you REALLY holding people accountable to a result?

OK, so what if you are not a leader … are you expecting your leaders to inspire you? Do they know that from you? Are you setting an example by seeking results?

Leaders are rarely birthed by time alone. They see a chance and they take it. And when that chance comes … they have a game plan to bridge their inspirations with reality.

Occupy Wall Street and the Church

Over the past month, I have struggled to understand the meaning of the Occupy Wall Street protests in NYC, Boston, and in other cities around the globe. Maybe I am dense ... but, it just seems like a group of people ... are protesting ... because they feel entitled to something they didn't work hard for. Then, I got to thinking ... WHY hasn't this thing settled down yet and just gone away? Could there be more to this grouping of people?

According their website ... Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%. We are using the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic to achieve our ends and encourage the use of nonviolence to maximize the safety of all participants.

The claim that they are the 99% puts emphasis on the 1%. Why are they so mad at the 1%? Is it just corruption & greed? Or, is it more? What should we expect from the 1%?

What should we expect from our leader(s)? Below is a good list from The Nolan Principles tied to an advisory board in the UK called The Committee on Standard in Public Life. Catch that? Public Life. Aren't Pastors "public" too?

Consider this list below ...

  • Selflessness – Holders of public office should act solely in terms of the public interest. They should not do so in order to gain financial or other benefits for themselves, their family or their friends.
  • Integrity – Holders of public office should not place themselves under any financial or other obligation to outside individuals or organizations that might seek to influence them in the performance of their official duties.
  • Objectivity – In carrying out public business, including making public appointments, awarding contracts, or recommending individuals for rewards and benefits, holders of public office should make choices on merit.
  • Accountability – Holders of public office are accountable for their decisions and actions to the public and must submit themselves to whatever scrutiny is appropriate to their office.
  • Openness – Holders of public office should be as open as possible about all the decisions and actions they take. They should give reasons for their decisions and restrict information only when the wider public interest clearly demands.
  • Honesty – Holders of public office have a duty to declare any private interests relating to their public duties and to take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest.
  • Leadership - Holders of public office should promote and support these principles by leadership and example.

What does this mean for you & your Church? How are you looking at the Occupy Wall Street protests? Do you look at YOU first? What's in YOU before you point to THEY? I'd love to hear your comments!

3651 Days Later … Next Steps for America

I stood there amazed.

With all the issues & decisions this past week … around “God talk” and prayer during our 9/11 remembrances and ceremonies here in the United States … and the unwillingness to invite our God into these places … there stood the President of the United States … whether you like him or not … reading Psalm 46. No matter how jaded you may be … or what side of the aisle you fall … yesterday, on 9/11 … our President read from the Bible. Watch the video below.

Psalm 33:12 (MSG)

God takes the wind out of Babel pretense, he shoots down the world’s power-schemes. God’s plan for the world stands up, all his designs are made to last. Blessed is the country with God for God; blessed are the people he’s put in his will.

The next steps for this Nation … 3,651 days after 9/11/2001:

  1. Acknowledge God as the author of ALL authority in your life.
  2. Be humble. From teenagers to politicians and every one in between.
  3. As Andy Stanley said yesterday … “We need to declare our dependence on God.
  4. As believers, we need to be bold in our faith … remembering that the MAJORITY of Americans believe there is a God.
  5. Stop bowing to the minority with our actions and words – so not to offend. More people believe like you … than you realize.
  6. Live a life worth following. Set an example that points back to your Heavenly Father. Let others see you lean hard into Him in the bad times and good times.
  7. Do not silence your Christianity under the heading of “political correctness.”
  8. Beg God to rise up leaders in our Nation that are humble and God-fearing.
  9. Serve others where you see the need and sense God asking you to fill it.
  10. Become a percentage giver of your income. Be generous!

Blessed is the country with God for God.

Bryan
