A great virtual work relationship … doesn’t just happen. It’s no different from having a working relationship with an on-site team member. Below are four ways … to make sure your virtual working relationships thrive!
1) Help your virtual employees understand the WHY behind the what. Most people who work virtually … are (or should be) already a trusted member to your team. They are not “time clock punchers” per se. They are more results oriented than hours worked type of people. That said, these people want to know WHY they are asked to do something not to say no … but rather … to give them meaning in what they are doing for you. It looks like this: “Hey Jenny or Hey Mike, I need you to do this for me because it enables me/us to …”
2) Approach virtual working relationships with the pre-determined mindset of TRUST vs. suspicion. It’s easy to let the mind wander when a virtual team member didn’t do something they agreed it would. When that happens … when there is a gap in expectation … fill that gap with trust vs. suspicion. Assume the best in your team first … not the worst. By doing so, you’ll develop a culture of trust … and your team will learn to extend the same trust back to you.
3) Don’t communicate that a virtual relationship is not as lasting or as strong as a relationship developed by working on-site. Fact is … more & more churches and pastors today are working virtually … and the strength of a relationship today is not just measured by proximity.
4) Get face to face … via web technologies. Calibrate yourself with your virtual team members at least once a week via Skype or etc. We have Clients that have developed a Skype cart with a flat screen monitor … so that it (and the virtual team member) can be literally rolled into a meeting, conference room, and etc … and be part of the experience.
The best working relationships … take time. By practicing the four above … in addition to leading your virtual team like you would any other employee … you’ll find yourself in a growing, efficient, results-focused organization.
