Healthy Small Groups Start With Your Systems & Processes

Last week I was part of a webinar, hosted by CCB (a MAG Partner) with Steve Caton … and Jay McGuirk of FBC Hattiesburg.

We covered off a few topics tied to small group health.

  1. How technology plays a part in enhancing your church’s small group efforts.
  2. Visibility into small group health takes focus.
  3. Measuring life change starts with taking subjective ideas and creating objective measurement.
  4. Reporting for small group health takes consistency (and, then action).
  5. Real-life EXAMPLE from Jay McGuirk at FBC Hattiesburg
  6. Q&A at the end

Here are the webinar notes if you wish to download: MAG & CCB – Small Groups Webinar – Notes – April 2012

Thank you CCB for making an investment in the Kingdom!

Lasting Virtual Work Relationships

A great virtual work relationship … doesn’t just happen. It’s no different from having a working relationship with an on-site team member. Below are four ways … to make sure your virtual working relationships thrive!

1)  Help your virtual employees understand the WHY behind the what. Most people who work virtually … are (or should be) already a trusted member to your team. They are not “time clock punchers” per se. They are more results oriented than hours worked type of people. That said, these people want to know WHY they are asked to do something not to say no … but rather … to give them meaning in what they are doing for you. It looks like this: “Hey Jenny or Hey Mike, I need you to do this for me because it enables me/us to …”

2)  Approach virtual working relationships with the pre-determined mindset of TRUST vs. suspicion. It’s easy to let the mind wander when a virtual team member didn’t do something they agreed it would. When that happens … when there is a gap in expectation … fill that gap with trust vs. suspicion. Assume the best in your team first … not the worst. By doing so, you’ll develop a culture of trust … and your team will learn to extend the same trust back to you.

3)  Don’t communicate that a virtual relationship is not as lasting or as strong as a relationship developed by working on-site. Fact is … more & more churches and pastors today are working virtually … and the strength of a relationship today is not just measured by proximity.

4)  Get face to face … via web technologies. Calibrate yourself with your virtual team members at least once a week via Skype or etc. We have Clients that have developed a Skype cart with a flat screen monitor … so that it (and the virtual team member) can be literally rolled into a meeting, conference room, and etc … and be part of the experience.

The best working relationships … take time. By practicing the four above … in addition to leading your virtual team like you would any other employee … you’ll find yourself in a growing, efficient, results-focused organization.

Who are Virtual Groups Pastors?

It’s a common question we get at MAG  …  “Who are Virtual Groups Pastors?

Below is a video … to show you who our VGPs are. In this video … you’ll see one of our VGPs (Paul) introducing himself to his new small group leader(s) that he’ll daily lead/serve as an “on call doctor” in the realm of small group leader coaching & development. Paul (living in Seattle, WA), as a MAG VGP, reports into the small group leadership at the church (in Hattiesburg, MS). If you are a map nerd … that’s 2,673 miles apart.

Ain’t technology great?

Still struggling with developing your small groups? Need help sorting out the WHY before the HOW?

Reach out to MAG to help you & your church. We can consult with you on small groups … AND then … help you execute.

4 Topics for Small Group Growth

Are you killing yourself at your church … trying to get people to commit to a full 12, 18, or 24 months of small group commitment? What if you could bridge people new to small groups with some short-term commitments (6 to 8 weeks) … to help them dip their toe in the water?

People new to church … and small group … will likely try a small group out … IF they have a way to test it before they buy it. Here are 4 relevant & practical topics below … to help you ease folks into small group.

How about these enticing invitations ….

  1. Marriage - falling in love is easy … but staying in love can be difficult. Find out what the Bible has to say about loving your spouse in ways that will make your marriage last a lifetime!
  2. Finances - managing money can cause confusion and stress. Learn how to develop a budget and deal with debt based on practical financial principles found in the Bible.
  3. Spiritual Growth – what does it mean to have a personal and growing relationship with Jesus? Gain practical tools to help you read the Bible with more depth and understanding. Learn ways to help you pursue deeper intimacy with God.
  4. Parenting - your kids start off so small, cute, and innocent. But, will they end up that way? Learn what the Bible teaches us about parenting (and how your marriage impacts it).

Getting people to join small groups for the long-term can potentially begin with a short-term step! This idea also enables your small group leaders with opportunities to add in new people and/or offers them an alternative during busy seasons in their life.

Small Groups Pastor Comparisons

MAG has popped up on many church radars lately with our MAG Virtual Groups Pastor (VGP) service. Beyond the “how does this work” question … which we love to answer … we thought it would be a good idea to objectively demonstrate our VGP service by the numbers.

A church running 450 in morning worship attendance (MWA) … with small group attendance/penetration at 50% … equals about 225 people in small groups … which equals about 18 groups with 10 to 12 people in them. Said another way, a church with 450 in MWA has about 18 small group leaders that need to be consistently connected with, coached, and observed.

MAG’s VGP service … is a game changer in HOW a church powers their small groups effort.

Here’s a comparison chart (CLICK HERE) … detailing the difference in costs between hiring a small groups pastor … vs. deploying a MAG VGP … to execute your small groups.

Think we are biased or just plain crazy with our numbers? Here’s a good snapshot by the Small Business Administration (SBA) on the REAL costs of having an employee.

If you would like to skin-the-cat differently with your small groups … OR just add oomph to your small groups team … we’d love to chat with you. Contact us HERE. There’s so much more to our VGP service than just dollar savings … but, we know that money talks.

Virtual Small Groups Pastors

It’s a Friday morning at 7:03 AM EST and Chad slumbers to his kitchen for his first cup of coffee for the morning. As the brew grows taller in the carafe … he fumbles on his iPhone & sees a text from Rob. The text appears to be urgent. It reads: Need to talk ASAP this morning. Rough small group last night. Need help. Chad quickly texts Rob back … and gives him time(s) this morning that he can chat on his way into work.

It’s now 8:30 AM EST (in Atlanta) and Chad calls Rob (in Denver) … 6:30 AM MST for Rob. Chad starts the call by saying, “OK Man, what’s up?” Rob & Chad have a growing relationship … because Chad is Rob’s Virtual Groups Pastor. They know each other’s life stories. They’ve gone deep with each other. Time to get down to business. Rob says, with a weary voice, “Last night, our small group discovered that Sherrie is having an affair. It was an awkward night and I am unsure of how to lead this mess. What do I do?”

WELCOME TO LEADING PEOPLE VIRTUALLY.

Chad quickly asks a few more questions … Rob answers. They nail down a game plan for next steps with Sherrie & her husband. Chad guides Rob on the phone in a prayer for wisdom & courage. Rob hangs up … and heads back to the task(s) of “doing life” with his group. Chad calls the Lead Pastor at the church for an update and leaves a voice-mail. Proactive measures/actions are in place … and the Church is being the Church to a broken marriage … and a shell-shocked small group.

Ready to take your Church to the next level with small groups? Ready to start doing small groups … in a proactive fashion with seasoned small group pastors?
