Second-Rate Churches

Excuses, excuses, excuses!

Nothing drives us more mad at MAG … than when a church acts second-rate! Rise above the marginal abyss of the typical church … and strike out against church-mediocrity! Decide NOW for excellence!

Here are some questions & thoughts to ponder tied to this subject … and, we  beg you to consider … and/or, use this blog post to spark an overdue conversation in your church.

  • Your church bulletin is stuck in the 1980′s … and is a folded 8.5″ x 11″ paper with boring font, silly clip art, and criticizes people for not serving enough or giving enough. The bulletin is for posting information NOT the pastor’s lousy way of vision-casting because he’s too scared to say it from the platform.
  • Who said it was OK not to pick up the trash in your church’s front yard? People who drive by your church ask this question all the time. Who thinks that un-kept landscaping looks professional? Cut the grass, trim the weeds, umbrella your trees, add some “pop” to the outside of your church. Fix that broken sign! Screen the trash cans! Put the trailer in the shed! Stop looking so Hillbilly! Whether you like it or not, your building and property represents you & your church to the community … AND … don’t miss this … communicates something about what you believe about your God.
  • Why doesn’t anyone in your community come knocking on your door … to be taught how to run a quality organization? Why is it that people laugh when they hear that a pastor is going to talk with a business on business principles? Churches should be a model of quality for running organizations, managing finances, and developing leaders … not the punchline to a joke.

Change it up CHURCH! Stop making excuses for your actions and behaviors. Start executing with excellence. Pick 2 or 3 things for your church to get really, really good at … then do it! Also, pick 2 or 3 things in your church that suck … and stop doing it!

People … all the time … are watching you.

What’s it gonna be? More excuses … or a powerful image of quality & excellence?

Your decision(s) impact us all.

Good Interior Church Signs – Example

We received several good eMails and comments on a recent suggestion to “refresh” the signs at your church in 2011 … tied to this post: http://www.magsays.com/2010/12/3-things-your-church-should-do-in-2011.html. Several churches wanted to know what a good example of interior signage looked like.

Here’s an example (SCROLL DOWN) that we found for you … from Rock Bridge Community Church located in Dalton, GA. This church “gets it” tied to their signs around the campus. The do a good job pointing attendees to “next steps” and they capture the church’s heart, passion, mission, and goal of life-change tied to relationship in/with Jesus. Below, we have offered some examples for you. Enjoy & learn! Throw the framed needle-point hanging in the foyer in the trash.

3 Things Your Church Should Do in 2011

2011 is almost upon us. Are you pumped? Fired up for ALL that God will do through you next year?

Here are 3 things from MAG … we think you should do in your church in 2011:

  1. Use Web-Based Church Management Software. Kick the paper and antiquated client-based software to the curb! Invest a little and get a lot back in return … like safer kid environments, deeper data/analysis, and stronger end-user adoption (meaning, stuff your church attendees will use).
  2. Tidy up & enhance your exterior campus sign(s). Make your 1970′s road sign current. Along sidewalks, show contemporary way-finding sign(s) on your campus that lead to a “welcome center” … the church offices … kid’s environments … the worship center … coffee shop … and etc. Show people where to go with your signs. Stop making them guess. A new visitor is sizing you up by your parking spaces available, safe kid environments that don’t smell like cat urine, intuitive signs, and non-invasive “next steps” environments. You only have a few short minutes with a visitor on your campus before they decide if they will ever come back. Walk around your campus with a pair of “I’m a Visitor” glasses on and see what they see.
  3. Consider the use of a Strategic Outsider … to help your church gain objective counsel … or just plain get something done. Strategic Outsiders come in many shapes and sizes. Architects, Consultants, AVL Firms, Software Companies, Contractors, Banks, Church Outsourcing Firms, and Capital Campaign companies have different perspectives that could help your church in 2011. Ask them questions and seek their specific-wisdom. Take on a new initiative this coming year in your church … and, execute it with the help of others outside your church.

At MAG … we hope you’ll have a great 2011! Your work is eternal … and we support you! You’re endeavors are the reason why MAG exists! Thanks for all that you do for God’s Kingdom … and for finding more lost people who need a personal relationship with Jesus.

Pastor Attention Deficit Disorder (PADD)

Pastor Attention Deficit Disorder (more commonly known as PADD) … is a disorder that can easily be corrected with a few simple steps. You see PADD in several forms, but usually in the form of a Pastor who is easily distracted by their smartphone when they should be fully engaged in a conversation with their church staff or attendees or people in general. They pretend to be listening to you while texting or tweeting or eMailing or playing Angry Birds.

Here’s a few short tips to address the illness of PADD in your church:

  1. Novel thought – don’t pick up the phone in the midst of an actual face-to-face conversation. Keep it on the desk, in your bag, or in your pocket. Few phones calls needs to be answered right now. Even fewer texts need to be replied to immediately.
  2. Keep eye contact with the person you are face-to-face with. Nothing says “you are sooooo unimportant to me” than fidgeting with your phone while you are talking with someone.
  3. Stay focused on the conversation with that person face-to-face by asking clarifying questions and confirming action items and next steps.
  4. If you know you are going to have a longer face-to-face conversation with someone … put your phone on vibrate.
  5. Finally, remember that you’re not the only one who is busy. Your busyness is not a symbol of success or prestige. Your full attention on someone else is way cooler than how cool you look with your fancy smartphone.

By following these simple steps … you too can avoid the onset of PADD in your church. And, you gain a cool rep for being a person who knows how to live in the moment and really knows how to engage with others.

OK … now … Tweet this blog post. :)

Cheaper than an Affair

It still amazes me … when it happens. It shouldn’t shock me … but it does. It shocks a lot of us for good reasons. Church leaders (mostly Pastors) have “moral failures” with their Assistant(s) all over the US and around the globe (AND, those are the ones we know about). Sure, we could over-spiritualize their temptations or say that they were under spiritual attack … but … I would simply suggest this:

  • Pastors who have affairs are visibly arrogant people. They believe their own press and they think everyone else does too. They are only fooling themselves and catering only to people who fuel their ego. Show me an arrogant pastor and I will show you a pastor in an affair or about to have one. Their arrogance … if left unchecked … will jack up other people(s) faith.
  • Pastors NEED distance away from their Assistants. I hear “AMEN” coming from pastor’s wives and elder teams with a thunder! Distance is called “forced accountability” … or, in simple terms … boundaries … guardrails … or margin.
  • During temptation or as the “innocent flirting” heats up … pastors gain convenient ”amnesia.” They need to remember that a decision to cheat or have an affair … is a career-ending move. I’ve yet to see a strong bounce-back in the ministry from a pastor who cheated.

Our company (MAG) … offers outsourced, virtual/remote EAs (Executive Assistants) for church leaders and pastors. In fact, MAG EAs are currently working with church leaders all over the US. If you want more info on this service to help your church or pastor … please go to our website at www.milesadvisorygroup.com. Or, consider our service this way: Our EA services are cheaper than an affair. What do you have to lose? A lot from our perspective.

Churches: How Secure Are Your IT Systems?

Churches: how secure are your systems?

Symantec recently commissioned Applied Research to survey more than 2,000 organizations. They discovered that the majority were still plagued with lost devices, cyber-attacks, poor back-ups and recovery processes. Here are some highlights:

  • 74% of small & medium organizations were affected by cyber-attacks in the past 12 months. The average annual cost of these attacks were $188,242.
  • 62% of small organizations lost at least one mobile device in the past 12 months.
  • 100% of these organizations said at least some of their lost devices had no password protection.
  • Less than one-third of these organizations had the capability to remotely wipe devices in the event of a loss.
  • 42% of small & medium organizations have lost confidential or private data in the past 12 months. 40% experienced direct financial costs as a result.
  • 47% of those surveyed said they still do not back-up their data.

Leadership in church takes many forms. Being a good steward of God’s resources also means taking care of the investments you have with your IT systems. At times, as a church … you are responsible for very private and sensitive data. Don’t be stupid … develop some plans/processes/systems to offset possible future IT calamity.

Church Leaders Can Learn from Fergie

“We don’t sit around and think about our Grammys. You become a caricature if you try to repeat the magic of the past. There’s new magic to be made.”

Fergie (Black Eyed Peas)

New & Improved!

The oldest trick in the marketing book. People love new and improved. They like fresh. They like the idea that something they buy over and over again is re-done, and constantly improving. People don’t “buy” churches per se … BUT … they do still want you and your organization to be new & improved!

No one likes going to a worn-down Starbucks for a cup of luke-warm, average coffee. No one enjoys struggling to navigate their favorite retailers websites to checkout. No one loves going to an “OK” performance of their favorite artist. No one is pumped to buy a Commodore 64.

Like it or not … embrace it or not … the people (all of them) who attend your church are also consumers every single day of the year. They (your consuming-church-attendees) … like new and improved. It’s not bad. People should expect a lot from you & your church. They also should expect that you expect a lot out of them too. You should see them doing new & improved things in their everyday walk with Jesus.

So … how about it? Is there new magic to be made in your church? What can you do to keep it fresh, new, and improved? If you have ideas on how to keep churches new & improved … please submit your ideas/comments to this post.
